MAGAZINE DESIGN

Progress Magazine

The challenge

Progress Magazine is an independent psychology and self-development publication empowering millennial and Gen Z women to build fulfilment on their own terms. With research-backed articles translating psychological theory into practical strategies, the publication needed a visual identity that felt thoughtful, engaging and accessible. Working alongside founder and editor Emma Clark-Norris, I helped establish the magazine’s look and feel, creating a visual approach that reflected the depth of the content while offering a more refined and cohesive reader experience. MAGAZINE DESIGN

The solution

My role involved shaping the magazine from the initial cover concepts through to the complete publication layout, creating a consistent visual language across each section. The design introduced a clean, contemporary style with feminine-leaning typography, structured layouts and carefully selected imagery that reflected the interests and expectations of its millennial and Gen Z audience. Large feature images introduce stories throughout the publication, while supporting imagery within articles helped bring concepts to life and guide readers through the topics in an engaging way.

The outcome

Launched in 2025, Progress Magazine debuted with a cohesive visual identity and a publication style that brought together psychology, personal growth and lifestyle content. The finished magazine delivered an engaging reading experience designed to resonate with its millennial and Gen Z audience, with readers responding positively to its thoughtful design, premium feel and easy-to-navigate layouts.

Client kudos

“I can't tell you how glad I am that I found Rachel! When I approached her, Progress Magazine was just a dream that had been brewing away for years. I knew what type of written content I wanted to include, but I didn't know what I wanted it to all look like. When I stumbled upon Rachel's website, I hoped I had found the right designer — after all, she specialised in magazine design. But, I can safely say that Rachel not only met my expectations but blew them out of the water. From the very first cover concepts she sent through, she turned my rough idea into a stunning visual identity that didn't look like anything else on the market. The cover was so beautiful, unique and professional, that was the moment I knew I could properly get excited about Progress Magazine. Rachel then went on to design the entire magazine in record time, and I can confidently say without her, the project never would have got out the door (let alone, distributed in thousands of magazines around the country!) Her design is what help legitimise the mag and made it real.
Apart from being incredibly talented, Rachel is a joy to work with. She's fast, responsive, reliable, patient and direct in the very best way — you never have to try to read between the lines with her. She can also take feedback on board and never seems to take it personally — instead taking it in her stride and iterating until it's perfect. I have had SO many compliments on the design and it's all thanks to Rachel. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a world-class editorial designer and creative partner.”
